Rio 2016: NZ Cycling gets full qualification

UCI, the ruling body of cycling, has confirmed that, for the very first time, Kiwis has qualified for each field in track cycling for this year’s Rio Olympics.

New Zealand is one of just 3 countries to have accomplished full qualification with Germany and Australia being the other two.

As well as the team pursuit, team sprint and omnium for both women and men, New Zealand has qualified 2 spots for the individual sprint as well as the keirin, again both for women and men.

Dayle Cheatley, the head coach, told that this is what they have working towards and it was cemented with some prodigious performances at World Championships in London.

It is encouragement for their coaches as well as support staff that they are moving in the right direction and magnificent reward for the riders throughout their entire squad who have all contributed.

He further added that for them, this is the first tick in the box. The hard work starts now. All the work they have put in to establish this platform would be wasted if they could not take full advantage from here in.

Cheatley told that the coaching people want to make sure that the riders maximize the next nineteen weeks until Rio.

They wanted to make sure that the riders make every day, every pedal stroke, every session, every lift as well as every minute of rest count.

The riders have returned to full training after a break following world championships in London.
